How To Tell If a Candle Is Non-Toxic

By Alicia Gray

There's nothing like lighting a candle at the end of a long day - soft light flickering, your home filling with a scent that makes everything feel calm and cosy. But have you ever stopped to wonder what you're actually breathing in? (And when you do, don't freak out! Read this post first...)

Unfortunately, not all candles are created equal. Some contain ingredients that release harmful toxins into the air - things you wouldn't want anywhere near your home, let alone your lungs. That’s why knowing how to tell if a candle is non-toxic is so important. Especially if you're burning them around kids, pets, or just want peace of mind.

So, how to tell?

1. Check the Wax Type

The type of wax used makes a big difference. Many mass-produced candles use paraffin wax, a by-product of petroleum. When burned, paraffin can release potentially harmful chemicals into the air like benzene and toluene.

Instead, opt for candles made from natural waxes like:

  • Coconut soy wax (our favourite – clean-burning, sustainable, and long-lasting)

  • Pure Soy wax

  • Beeswax

Our coconut soy wax candles are hand-poured in regional Victoria and are completely free of paraffin, phthalates, and nasties - because your home should feel safe and smell beautiful.

2. Look for 100% Cotton or Wood Wicks

Wicks matter too. Avoid candles with metal-core wicks, which can contain trace elements of lead (yes, even now). Instead, choose candles with:

  • 100% cotton wicks (you can tell it's cotton if it looks like a braid!)

  • Natural wood wicks

At Highland Home Fragrance, we only use lead-free cotton wicks in our Australian-made candles. It’s better for your air, and your peace of mind.

3. Be Cautious About Fragrance

Fragrance is what makes a candle special, but not all fragrance oils are created equally. Some synthetic fragrances can contain phthalates, which are linked to respiratory irritation and hormone disruption.

A non-toxic candle will be:

  • Free from phthalates

  • Free from parabens

  • Safe fragrance information is available (check ingredients tabs, FAQs etc)

We use premium fragrance oils that are phthalate-free across all our scent ranges from nostalgic blends like Apple Crumble to floral favourites like Forever in My Heart.

4. Check for Eco-Friendly Practices & Transparency

Brands that make non-toxic candles usually talk about it. If a label or website doesn’t clearly mention what’s in the candle or how it’s made, it’s worth questioning.

Our eco-friendly candles are proudly:

  • Handmade in Australia

  • Crafted in small batches

  • Poured with coconut soy wax and zero nasties

  • Packaged with recyclable or compostable materials

5. Trust Your Nose and Head

If you feel dizzy, get a headache, or notice your eyes burning after lighting a candle - it might be a red flag. Non-toxic candles should enhance your space, not overwhelm it.

In summary, you shouldn’t need a chemistry degree to enjoy a candle safely. At Highland Home Fragrance, we believe in creating scents that warm your heart and home without compromising your health.

Every candle we make is a little moment of calm, a story told in scent and a safer choice for your space.
